It can be nerve-wracking to take your child to the dentist. How will they react? Will they even sit still long enough to get the care they need? At the Durham Dental Group, we offer treatment from a children’s dentist who will help your child feel at ease while providing quality care.
Dentistry for Kids: How Can I Help Care for my Child’s Teeth?
Learning how to best care for your child’s teeth may be a process, but our team is here to help. Consider the following tips to help your child get a healthy start:
- Bring your child to the dentist after the first tooth grows in or by their first birthday. Your children’s dentist will help you discover any issues that could arise and work hard to prevent decay.
- Clean your child’s mouth regularly. If your child’s teeth haven’t erupted yet, you can care for their gums with a clean, damp washcloth. Once teeth have erupted, clean their teeth with a soft infant toothbrush and toothpaste. When your child’s teeth are touching, it’s time to start flossing.
- Supervise your child’s oral care until they are 6. Help your child effectively brush their teeth and avoid swallowing toothpaste.
- Limit sugary snacks, desserts, and juices. When your child consumes something with a high sugar content, try to have them brush their teeth or rinse their mouth soon after.
